Old Buckenham and Norwich

Social and Wine Circle
Members learnt the connection between shawls, newspapers, shoes, beer, mustard, wire netting, chocolate and aircraft at their May meeting. The evening’s speaker was Rob Spokes (a Norwich Blue Badge guide) who explained how they were all important things that had been made over the years in Norwich. Lots of other industries had also been vital in the growth of Norwich as a very important city, things such as weaving, insurance and banking. Even today the shopping facilities and the hub of scientific knowledge keep Norwich high in the rankings within the UK. Much of his talk was illustrated by pictures of some of the buildings where these activities took place and that still remain today.
The next meeting will be on Thursday 9 June when Sarah Doig will be talking on Victorian village schools. It will take place in the Church Rooms in Old Buckenham starting at 7.30pm and all are welcome.
